Administration Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
