Similar to Storm Claudia tore through the northern region the night before, the home side overwhelmed United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive Women's Super League setbacks for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to balance domestic and continental football with a limited squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always appeared this was the week that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed fatigued all game, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

The hosts, in opposition, have no similar fitness worries. The City coach made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to defeat any side who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding position after nine matches.
