"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

One thing is obvious something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy nominees.

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience called for a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

However the band will always be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
