Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
